A HUMPTY DUMPTY DAY!

OMG!  What a way to start the New Year!  Yesterday I transferred all my photos onto the auxiliary hard drive.  I went to bed.  I awoke to very bad news.  My auxiliary hard drive, like Humpty Dumpty, crashed and couldn't be put back together again!  I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO BACK UP THE PHOTOS.  Lesson: Do it first!  I was so rattled, I dropped half a dozen eggs as they were being put back in the frig.  My husband had fun documenting the disaster but then was kind enough to clean it all up.  My grandson, Nick (age 20) thought it was hilarious and was going to share on a website called "FML"  I'll let you figure out what that stands for.

Most likely the data is retrievable but for a king's ransom.   This has to be the most expensive lesson I have ever learned.

Oh, Myrna!! What a lousy experience! Backups are the forgotten step-children of our digital lives -- I'm going to back up my computer RIGHT NOW!!!

How frustrating - I am so sorry to hear of your disaster. The eggs pale into insignifcance really, alongside the loss of your data. I do hope that this is IT for 2010 and that you have had all your disasters in one go, right at the start of the year!

Oh Myra...what a nightmare! Surely your mac will let you go back in timeline to retrieve photos? Having an external hard drive crash is like the worst nightmare in life. (Modern life!). Are you wishing you had burned these photos to a DVD as well? I am paying attention because I am considering buying a separate drive for just photos and movies and music. But what if it crashes? OMG. Sorry about the eggs. I am reminded that there is someone out there that paints broken egg shells so beautifully. Who is that?

Hi...
I know the feeling it happened to me, too.
Anyway... Happy new year full of creative ideas...!!!

Well, I thought that was why you had an external hard drive - to save you from crashes?!! You mean I have to copy everything twice to know it's safe? OMG, indeed!

I too have spawn that find my struggles LOL hilarious. Know, dear Myrna, that someday, they too will be in the same situation. Have patience with the hard drive. It wasn't ready to wake up;).

I'm so sorry to read about your experience, but happy my mother referred me to your blog. I too, lost about 10 years of art work, family photos and a book in a hard drive crash. --Mira

Chris, back up to a cd! I was waiting until I had "organized" the photos into categories so the cd would be easy to find. Guess I will be doing all the cataloguing as I download from now on!

Marancat, I had a suggestion to restart my New Years on the first day back to school, which would be Monday. I think I will take the do-over!

Ginny, the timeline thing just got installed after I removed the photos! Bummer

Kathy Cartwright does the eggshells so fantastically. Her blog is listed on the side of mine.

Mariela, thanks for the empathy. Why don't we learn from others?

Rhonda, you have to have the information on two sources so that if one crashes, the other has it. I had just put the photos onto only the hard drive and didn't back them up to cds. My bad, bigtime.

Thanks, Kathy, Patty, Diana and Mira. I appreciate your caring.

Maggie, that's what my mother said! The wisdom of each generation being passed down. I'm afraid the hard drive isn't just sleeping, it is dead!

Wow, what agony. Thanks for telling us about backing up to a second source. Sure hope your new year is much better from here on out.

Thanks, Sandy, Only direction it can go is up!

Hello, I'm new to following your blog. This happened to a year's worth of reference photographs on my computer a year or two ago...My grandmother had another name for this kind of day, it's from Anne of Green Gables..."A JONAH DAY..."

You know that funny selection on your camera that says "format"? After our trip to Italy my husband clicked it and lost all the pictures from our trip; then I did the very same thing after a trip to Israel. Who says all this electronic stuff would be so wonderful? It can be a pain in the arse.

SOOO sorry to hear that, Myrna! I'm familiar with "FLM", and before I find MY story contained therein, I think I'll get a carton of CD's and get to work. Hope you can retrieve all your data.

Lol, MYRNA! I'm truly sorry and I can empathize with you as it's happened to me before. It's happened for some very important projects and there was no way to get back my information. My precious time was lost and the second attempt to do the project wasn't as good as the original version! Well happy new year!
