MOVING SLOWLY AHEAD!

This is my favorite of the sketches.  I have done all six but I am having a problem with scale.  The masks are too small for the size of my head.  Do I enlarge the masks or scale down my head?  This project is becoming more challenging than I had anticipated but should be worth the struggle.  I guess I have to redraw all the sections until I am satisfied.  I am getting anxious to put paint to paper but preparation makes all the difference for success.  Funny, Robert Genn's letter tonight stated just the opposite opinion.   Since watercolors aren't quite so flexible as acrylics, I think the planning is more important.  To each his own.

I love this concept of masks. Brilliant! And this drawing is perfect.

And yes, perhaps the mask could be larger. Then again, having it smaller can be a statement too... The preparation before painting can be time consuming but always worth it in the end.

An interesting dilemma! I can see the scaling done both ways and I guess it depends upon the message you want to convey. It's a marvelous concept!

You are right, planning does make all the difference, when I don't plan I get into trouble. I think having the face and the mask a different size could be a statement. Are you putting it on or taking it off? Is it who you were or what you want to be?

I would like to see the mask (at least in one example) "pushed" out closer to the viewer, therefore larger with respect to your face. This is so interesting...watching you work on this idea and solve the problems. Don't give up, whatever happens!

What a great blog with beautiful artowork! I have added your blog to follow I think what you are doing is really inspiring it is really hard to keep motivated sometimes perhaps I need to set myself some specific goals too. I think the issue of scale depends on what you want to be the focus of the composition the person or the mask. Whichever is bigger will dominate the painting more so this is an idea you could play with. I am an artist(painting ceramics music and photography) and brand new blogger and would love your feedback and any advice on getting started at http://carliestar.blogspot.com/

I really like this group of drawings. I especially appreciate the concept.
I think it has the potential to be very provocative. I have have some very interesting ideas on this.

I don't think the mask sizes are an issue. Masks fit over faces not heads. The face is a small in relations to the entire head.

I don't think you have to have the mask life-sized (they could all be smaller than your face - as Jeanette said, another statement about you being large in the present?).

When you first brought up this idea of the six masks, I thought you were implying these historical faces were women you admired and wished to honor. Even though you are wearing their 'hat' you still have to be your own artist self. I don't see a scale problem. My selfish side wants to see you start painting these soon -I think it's going to be great!
