KAREN FREY DEMO FINISHED!

Karen's painting turned out beautifully and it was fun to see her develop it from start to finish. Of course, then it was our turn to try to do the same. This is as far as I got. Most of it is very tight. Too tight for me. I did start to loosen up at the very last minute and see possibilities for merging some of her technique with my sensibilities for how I want to paint. The edges of each shape are the most difficult part of all. At least knowing what to look for and having a semblance of an idea how to go about it is a start. It is that darn "practice, practice, practice" mantra rearing it's ugly head again. No getting around it. At least it is fun practicing, practicing, practicing.

Wow! What a difference from day one and day two! The edges are wonderful and appropriate for the subject (both yours and hers). I like the design you're working with. It has a nice alternation of light and dark.

Karen has a show up at the Triton Museum. It is worth going to see that show to see how she can really stretch her technique.

As in the featured cat painting here, Myrna, she has found a way to bring color and texture variation into every value shape in her paintings. That variation makes for very exciting work. Having watched her paint several years ago, her focus then, as now, was to bring variety to every single square inch in the painting process. I am not sure that she states it that way, but that is the clear result of her focus . . .and it has enormous impact.

I am looking forward to spending some conversational time with her this comeing week.
