THE START

I was pleased with many of the outcomes of the last painting and have been thinking about the next variation.  Each painting needs to explore something different but keep to the self imposed requirements of combining collage, quilt or grid, drawing and self portraiture.  I decided to use the phone book as my collage material.  I found enough pages with some color variation and pattern to keep it interesting but not overpowering.  I kept the size of the drawings the same size as last time,  I am using the same drawing instrument for all the drawings. I took one of those cheap pull apart wooden chopsticks and whittled the wider end as thin as I could manage with a small box cutter blade.  I then shaped the more pointed end into an interesting shape for drawing fine lines.   I managed to get six of the drawings done today.  So far, I like the effect.

I will be doing a demo for the San Carlos Art Club tonight.  Everything gets underway at 7 PM   They meet at the San Carlos Adult Community Center, 601 Chestnut Street (corner of San Carlos Avenue).  Parking is available under the library - 1/2 block away.  I'm sure visitors are welcome.  I hope some on you will be able to stop by.

You take my breath away with your variations on themes. I follow your blog faithfully but I'm usually at a loss for words in the face of what you are up to on any one day. I loved watching your last pieces reach a finished point. I'm equally fascinated with your new beginning.

I like this new direction, and think that the phone book pages are much more effective than the calendar. Nice!!! Wish I could attend your demo. Have a great one :-)

I like these sketches, and also the idea of recycling old telephone books. But perhaps most of all I like the effect you get with the whittled sticks as dip pens.

Wish I lived close so as to attend your demo tonight. I really like your idea of whittling down wooden chopsticks! What kind of ink are you using with them?

These are so nice. To think I just threw away another phone book..recycled at least! I have a stack so maybe some will get used in art projects. I always used them in etching to wipe plates. I am anxious to see what else you come up with! Have fun at your demo

And to think I have an old set of encyclopedias! The pages are great, and the fine effect you get from chopsticks - for heavens sake - are astounding. I've said it before, but you are amazing - all the different things that you do. For me, I consider it a dramatic event when I switch from pen to pencil!

I'm just catching up after being away and have to tell you I was floored by your latest works using the calendar pages as collage bits - fantastic!! And really like the telephone book self-portraits with the words and that lovely pale green one...yummy!! Can't wait to see what you do with these. Have a great time in Kanuga.
