GERALD BROMMER WORKSHOP DAY 3: HEAVY TEXTURE PLUS LINE

Each day just gets better and better. I am very much attracted to this way of working. I hope to do a lot more in the future and have some greater insight into additional methods and ways of combining materials that I never thought of before. I have all the books but somehow they never sunk in. Probably sensory overload. There is only so much we can absorb at a time. I need to revisit lots of my books.

Today we built up the surface with collage paper, using brown bag or brown craft paper for the dark value. Covering the entire surface with layers of paper, then drawing and painting into the wet collage, especially adding white gouache which does amazing things on this surface. Then let it dry and then adding more line, paint, etc. Here are my two efforts for the day. I think this is the first workshop I have ever taken where I wanted to mat and sign anything I did. Amazing!

I am soaking up all of Gerald's wonderful stories and wisdom as well as his great techniques. He has traveled and taught for so many years that he has great little interesting adventures and experiences that he shares.

Tomorrow we will put gesso over the textural surface and paint on that. Gesso? I think I have died and gone to heaven!

Cindi, glad you like the paintings. The brown bag is just part of the papers. I also used lots of different Japanese washi papers and some of my own hand painted tissue paper. then you add white gouache and watercolor and lines etc. The brown bag gives a med. dark value to start on just part of the paper.

I'm really loving your daily posts re: the workshop and just reserved a copy of Brommer's collage techniques book. Can you tell if the techniques that you are learning are covered there?

I think I just prematurely sent a comment without filling in my name and URL. If it doesn't appear, I asked if you knew if the techniques that you are learning are in Brommer's Collage Techniques book, which I just put on hold at B and N.

Wonderful work, Myrna - not like workshop stuff at all where participants are feeling their way around most of the time - this looks like it's right up your alley! Glad you are enjoying it and looking forward to more postings.

I'm doing a acrylic and collage workshop myself this week. I'm learning so much but it is elementary compared to what you are doing. I'm OK with that, I'm far from your expertise. Thanks for sharing your wonderful art.

It has been a while since I've visited here, and I see I've been missing lots! I have never taken a Brommer workshop, though I have one of his books. I'm loving your comments and the results you achieved!
