NEW YEAR'S GOALS FOR 2016

Digital Drawing with Procreate
I can't believe 2016 is here already!  I usually have my goals set early in December but I was waiting to hear some new information regarding goal setting from Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, who has a PhD in brain science and is a tenured college professor.  As always she came through with some fascinating information.  One of the new insights I got was that the purpose of goal setting is not to achieve the goal but to have the goal.  It helps one to focus  and gives us something to strive for.  This is how I feel about creating art, ie. the importance and greatest value is in the doing not the end result.   I set goals for all aspects of my life but for this blog, I only talk about art.  Have you set any art goals for yourself this year?  Please share.  Each of us can be an inspiration for someone else.

One of my art goals is to gain a greater mastery over digital art.  I invested in a new iPad Pro and the digital stylus pencil, mainly as a new drawing tool.  So, my goal is to do a digital piece of art every day.  So far, I am on track!!!  This drawing was done in the app Procreate and I decided to use the pencil tool, 6B.  I was very surprised at the variation of line I got by just altering the angle I was holding the stylus.    Already learning something new!!!!  This is exciting.

One of my other goals is to start teaching in my new studio space.  I only have room for 4 students, so if you are somewhere in the San Mateo, California area and are interested, please contact me for more details.  Right now I am planning it to be a 3 hour session every other week.  I will be posting on Facebook and emailing my personal lists but this is the first place I have shared this news.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and and my best wishes for a creative New Year, full of the joy that art brings to us.

Good morning Myrna and Happy New Year.

I was lucky enough to receive an iPad Pro II as gift this Christmas and I'm just thrilled. The pencil is scarce and I'm still shopping for one but haven't put my nose to the ground and really searched one out.

Goals - to set regular studio hours and not let anyone infringe on that time. To take class with a "master" instructor to help take my work to the next level. - create and stick to an editorial calendar for my newsletter and blog. Finish a 1/2 sheet once a week. Have four Art & Wine sessions this year and to seek out teaching in senior living, Maintaining last years momentum of exhibiting and entering shows.

Your drawing on the iPad is inspiring, thanks for sharing.

Keeping the brushes wet,
Teresa

Hi Chris, Thank you for your kind words and good wishes. I listened to some of your messages for authors. Very informative and helpful. You inspire me to create some video posts! A wonderful 2016 to you.

Hi Teresa! Someone loves you a lot to gift such a fabulous item! Call your local Apple Store every morning around 10:30 to see if they have the Pencil in their daily delivery that day. If they don't, they can check other stores nearby. If you are prepared to buy it right then over the phone, they will set it aside for you and you can pick it up within the hour! That's how I got mine.

Your goals sound awesome. Another tip on goal setting I learned the other day was to really dedicate your self to one goal that will work like a keystone. If you focus on keeping regular studio hours, many of your other goals will automatically flow from that.

I look forward to seeing what you will do with your iPad Pro! The best for a wonderful 2016.

Happy New Year, Myrna. I'm sure your class will fill up and be so glad they joined you to learn what you know - that would take years!! I haven't set any goals, externally, but internally I am trying to tell myself to slow down, enjoy the process and stop downplaying my time in the art room as play or experiments or whatever instead of seeing them as the process of making art. I'm reading the book, Wabi Sabi right now and that is my goal - acceptance of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness in my art work and in my life work :). Wishing you a very successful year.

Happy New Year Myrna! I love the reminder with your goal...."it is the doing and not the end result." And your digital drawing looks amazing as always. I wanted to thank you for teaching in Watertown. I feel so privileged to have taken your class. You have pushed me into places I wouldn't have ever felt I could go. I never thought I was much of a drawer, and certainly not faces; but, I find myself drawing faces if I have even a moment of idle time. And, I can't help but think, that you had something to do with that. Thank you!! Maybe a few of us from SD can come as a group for a class. :)

Hi Rhonda, That sounds like a perfect goal! An anchor goal can create a cascading effect where other positive things will happen if you just focus on that one thing. Looks like a plan!

Kristin, thank you so much for your wonderful comments on my workshop. This is what a teacher hopes for and strives for and this kind of feedback is so rewarding for me to hear. Best wishes for continued joy with your art.
