VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE...HELP ME DECIDE!

I received the prospectus for the National competition sponsored by California Watercolor Society.  Christopher Schink is going to be the juror.  I was debating which of these two paintings I would send in for my entry.  I thought it might be fun to see what you think would be the stronger of the two entries.  If you would like to express your opinion, you can vote on the poll I created to the right." CWA is one of the few shows that allows collage but it has to be painted material.  All my collage paper is hand painted (no magazine or preprinted material).  If you would like to enter a painting of your own, you can download a prospectus from their website.  www.californiawatercolorwww.californiawatercolor.org

I was very excited to book a "Variations: One Image, Unlimited Possibilities" workshop for October, 2011 in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the Hot Springs Gallery.  The area is gorgeous and the facility looks wonderful.  Vanessa Segraves has a big line up of great artists this year (including Katharine Cartwright) and I am very privileged to participate next year.  I will be posting it on my website as soon as I get a chance.  In the meantime, you can see more about this wonderful venue by going to : www.hotspringsgallery.com.  I have only 3 more spots available for workshops next year.  If you know of a group looking for a workshop, let them know.

I really enjoy the delicate quality of the first one, but my eye was definitely more drawn to the colors and boldness of the second one! Both are stunning! Best of luck in the competition. =)

I would say more the lady.

my vote is for the first one...

These are all beautiful watercolor pieces! I especially love the "Hatful of Dreams"-- the detail involved in that one was extraordinary to say the least. I can assure you one thing, one dream in my hat is to someday be as great a painter as you (though you leave me with high expectations)! Do post more pieces soon! :)

I agree with Kelly, the first one grabbed me too! The second one reminds of Santa.

Good luck!

I like second one... :)

they are both amazing!

I can understand how difficult this decision is .....

The second one for me though, is extraordinary in its use of colour and texture .... that is my choice.

I think the first piece works well.

the first ones says so much to me!! definitely, the first one!!!

Since Schink is the jurior, definitely go for the first one! I love both but think the first one more breathing space in the design, and more oblique shapes as well as more harmonious color scheme, all of which Schink place a lot of emphasis in his books. (I'm sorry if this sounds a bit too oppotunistic...)

"Linda on Yupo" is strong yet sensitive. Great qualities to have in the same work.

Hi Myrna - I haven't looked at the Hot Springs line-up yet but am thrilled to know that you'll be there as well. Yay! I'll vote for a painting on the poll you set up. They're both amazing!

Sherry said...

I also am drawn to the woman's portrait more strongly. Something about her combination of grace and strength.

Kay said...

Definitely the first one. Will email you.

Mary Sonya Conti said...

the first speaks to the inner self but with the cold and snow of the midwest here...vote for the second with the warm red hues!

happy new year!!

Hi!
I think most people would prefer to have the first one in their home. But the second one is much more unusual, and therefore more interesting as a piece of art. I would submit the old man. I find it intriguing to wonder if he is santa clause, or a homeless person or someone u know...
I have just started writing a blog about Sweden, as i moved here two weeks ago. Will be posting drawings there too. If u want to follow my survival in the north, u find my blog here: http://thingsidowhenyoulookaway.blogspot.com/

all the best, kris

ohmygosh... why don't you make it an easy choice! They are both great. I'm drawn to the lady but you've caught the madness of the gentleman. Since I don't have a clue as to what judges look for, I'm not voting, but will be watching it with interest.

Good luck.

love the first one! It has real emotion, and personality.

Stone Caster said...

Change the title of pic no. 2 to something like "Inside My Head" and you have a better chance, methinks. Women are often depicted in art therefore there is nothing exceptional about no. 1, there is about no.2

Second painting hands down. Good composition, great color, nice technique.

yeah..the first one for sure

I like them both but I am drawn to the earth tones of the woman more. It really moves me...her expression. It grabs me too ;)

I loved th beauty of the first one, but the bold colors of the second one made it my favorite. You have real talent.

I love the second! He looks grumpy but you wonder if there is more to him under his hard exterior? Great work!

Deepratna Singh Parmar said...

amazing....

Mary Paquet said...

Myrna, I personally like the painting Linda very much, but I voted for Madness because in an art show, sometimes the more unusual pieces grab the juror. You certainly did an amazing interpretation of this old, and seemingly derelict, man. The shadows, line work, and color choices all add up to a winner.

lara dantas said...

the first is the best

Dee.. said...

i think the second one :)

what inspired you to paint him?

i love the viberant colours used and the way its like he is looking at somthing .... makes you wonder what lol

most definitely the first!

So glad I found your blog. Love your work. I also vote for the portriat of the lady.

Julicianne Qrott said...

the second one is more expressfull. mum told me the same so i send you 2 votes for the arabian man with colourful beard. your work is brilliant. keep painting!

feelchillingfireflashes said...

Both are beautiful! That's where the objectivity of economics try to suppress the subjectivity of art by having to decide the first and the second among equals. My vote in that case would go to the second one - it shows a much lovelier and emotional assembly of colours, with a very creative texture combination to it. Good luck!!!

Jessica P. said...

I love them both, but I think the clarity of the eyes in the first one makes me pay more attention or connect more.

Peggy Stermer-Cox said...

Hi Myna, Maybe you need to find a second show so you can submit both! It's hard to chose; they both commend themselves. But, I voted using your poll just for fun!

Shae Adele said...

They are both excellent! I can't decide!

But, if I have to pick just one, I'd go with the first. Great work!

Both are great, but I would pick the first painting. I prefer the facial expression in the second painting, but overall I don't feel the entire picture comes together as well. Best of Luck!

Hey :). I love your works. You're such a great artist!. Keep on creating!. I like more the second picture because of its colours. I sincerely wish you best of luck in the competition.

the first one is great

Mary-Jane said...

Although I personally preferred the second one, I think the first one would be better for the competition. It's the expression on her face - it makes you wonder what she just saw... Good luck!

Everyone seems to like the first one - but I like the second it has more character.

NourCan said...

Absolutely the first one, eyes captured. Good luck!

Hey, you have awesome artworks. I guess "HATFUL OF DREAMS" is the most perfect one.

Susan's MindSpace said...

The neck... the neck... the way that neck holds that face. The woman of course! Your blog popped up on my site. Being as there are no accidents, I took it as a sign. I will follow... and savor the creativity that is yours. :)

Hi! I just came across your blog. You are a great artist. Both of them looks wonderful. But if I have to pick one, I would pick the first one (lady). Good luck with the contest!

Paula Cravens said...

I love the texture and expression of the portrait of the woman but something about that floating white beard and the beautiful use of red really resonates in the male portrait. It stands out and made me think wow, whereas the first though beautiful was less of an impact. Hope this helps!

Jessaca said...

I like the first one because a womans face can say so much but yet say nothing at all and the soft colors

Jane Burbank said...

Thats awesome

WordLover said...

I think something about the first one says alot about who she is as a woman. It is very expressive.

Mary Crowell said...

well, the comments abound, for my design eye and you alone know how novice that is! I would have to vote for competition, the first, she is so subtile, sensuous, sublime and speaks to me! though you know me and I think the second with the bold colors would catch my eye from a judging viewpoint, (remember I judge floral designs!) just my 2 cents worth, you still have a difficult decision even with all the imput.

You do beautiful work and each one holds their own qualities. My eye is drawn to the second more though, I think in addition to the bolder colors , I find the expression on his face holds my attention more. Good luck!

I really like the man. It has many different colors and I feel, for some reason, much more feeling related to the man. So, I would say, the second piece.

numero uno! i really love the upper right corner of that painting. mmm incendiary!

I really like the guy, but i think the lady will go over better for a competition.

I love the texture used on her background as well as the rich brown colour scheme.

Ps: just ran across your blog & your work today. Love your techniques and your chosen subjects are amazing. I definitely feel inspired by your paintings.

the first one

matate said...

The second one. I think the rich color in his shirt and the texture of his beard. His eyes looking at what isn't there....maybe... I think I want to know how he lived, I am curious, because he has almost hidden himself with all the hair...I pick him.

JoBean said...

It's not an easy call, but I think number one is number one.

I don't think I've ever seen 95 comments on a blog! Well, no help from me, both are great and I believe it's always best to go with your own gut feeling. I like this philosophy, from the person I believe to be the best painter working today:

Build up you self esteem to the level that might seem unwarranted. This will help you ignore both positive and negative responses to your paintings. Both are usually misguided, since they come from the outside. Be your most severe and devastating critic, while never doubting that you are the best thing since sliced bread. Alex Kanevsky (from this classic interview: http://www.vivianite.net/alex-kanevsky-3.aspx)
