EXPERIMENTING!

HARRIET
It was my turn to sit at the new Society of Western Artists' gallery in San Bruno.  I used the time to explore some digital apps for my iPad to replace the PS Touch app which has been discontinued.  I can't find one that has all the features that I have been teaching in the latest workshop I have developed.  I did find one that is quite extensive, so I need to rework the curriculum.  Technology is amazing but it can be frustrating as well!  If you like to play, try iColorama

After I played around with a photo I took of my sister during our trip to Paris, I painted this little painting today.  I had saved all the papers from the trip and used them to collage  pages in my travel sketchbook.  Turns out these papers were from the central market in Florence, not papers from Paris.  I loved the graphics they used in the Central Market promotional materials and signage upstairs in the restaurant areas.  The papers were heavier than I usually glue down so I used a stronger solution of mat medium.   The watercolor resisted at first but I finally was able to get it to stick.  Interesting melding of the papers and paint.

Ken Goldman is teaching with the iPad app ArtStudio. You might check it out and see if it works for you. I wonder if more art workshop instructors will be using and teaching apps in the future? It's an interesting world we live in as far as technology. Have a great 4th weekend!

I love working with ProCreate, a bargain at $5.99.

Hi Rhonda, I am familiar with Ken's approach. He is using an app that uses drawing and painting simulations to see adjustments in an actual painting. I am using an app to alter photographs as a prompt to create a painting. A different concept and use of apps regarding art, both useful. I noticed lots of my students were using their digital phones and iPads in my classes. Lots of artists have them now and don't know how to work with these apps, so I decided to share what I know and how I use them. Thanks for checking in and sharing. I appreciate that so much.

Hi, Meera! So nice to hear from you. Try out iColorama. Paper Camera is also interesting. I put a photo through paper camera, save it and then use that with iColorama for some very interesting results. No end to variations that one can make

I've followed your blog and admired your work ever since I saw you do a fantastic demo at Kanuga many years ago. I've also become fascinated with various iPad digital apps. My goal is to alter my photos and then incorporate them into mixed media work. I can get totally obsessed with it. IColorama is my very favorite app. It's amazing. Repix is great for small touches. Glaze can be interesting and Superimpose to combine two photos. Have fun and be sure to share your experiences w/ us.

Hi Lynnda, Thank you for the kind words. Also, I appreciate your sharing some new apps with me. I shall check them out. I would love to see what you are doing. You can send me some images at myrnawack@prodigy.net.

Hi Myrna,

Found your art in the book Incite and loved it - have also been doing some self portraits but with iPad apps only. All my art has been photo manipulation but I am inspired to start doing mixed media pieces with it now. I am addicted to iColorama but I find SketchClub invaluable as a drawing tool especially the sketch tool and Superimpose invaluable for selections if you are not using it already - persevere with the magnetic tool (it jumps around) and you will love it in the end. Both Areograph and Imaengine can result in some useful automatic interpretations that can be blended. I am doing a 365 day challenge and I list all the apps I use on my blog so you might find something useful there. Happy arting!

Hi Ann, Thanks for the informative note! I love Sketch Club but haven't used it in the way you mentioned. Will revisit it and check out the other suggestions.
