If you have been thinking about entering a national watercolor competition but haven't taken that leap, now is the time! The San Diego Watercolor Society is taking submissions for their upcoming national show and the deadline is May 16th. You can do it all on line. This is a top society with a wonderful reputation. John Salminen is the judge this year. I have it on good authority that there has been a low entry rate this year. Maybe because it is all being done on the internet and old timers aren't used to that yet. All of you are techno savvy, so no problems there. What this means is that your odds of being accepted are higher when there are fewer entries. Don't miss out! Click on the blog title and it will take you to the SDWS show entry page. This is the painting I submitted.

Hi Myrna, The more I look at this painting, the more I'm intrigued by the expression! I hope it gets in.
BEAUTIFUL PIECE, I love the background texture too.
Thanks for the offer of the show entry, Myrna, but I'm no where near good enough for that yet - even the thought scares me! ha ha
There is something about your portrait...since you have the viewer looking up at her, it's almost like a child looking up at his/her mother with that same wondering of what she's thinking, what she's going to do next; and also a bit of tension there as a child will be a bit put off that mother is not paying attention to him/her at that moment. That's a lot of psycho-stuff, I know, and could come just from having babysat my 1 year old grandson recently and seeing all those feelings flit across his face at different times while keeping an eye on me all day long :) I know you'll get in the show - my wish is for a good prize!
Thanks for the nudge Myrna.I have entered 3 paintings fingers crossed.
Love this painting and I hope you get in and win the show! Thanks for the tip on the show. Would be fun to do something for a stretch -- have to work through the first rejection, right? Why not this one?
Well, I did submit my entry. I spent the first part of my life in San Diego, so it is my hometown. I visited SDWS recently--I have a large family and a 95 year old dad, so I make the pilgrimage down there
when I can. SDWS has a beautiful space, well organized with a sizable crew of volunteers. By the way, the best weather in that area occurs in September and October.
Thank you Peggy, Dominique, Rhonda, Jane, Mary and Maggie. Good luck to all getting in the show. Mary, I love you positive spin on a negative attitude!
Hi Myrna,
I really like slanted/shortened perspective of heads.
It transmits that the artist has a fine draughtmanship.
Your work on the values and the chosen pallete is great.
Good luck.
Kind regards,
José
