I spent the morning painting. Sometimes, you just have to set priorities. As you can see, I started out drawing the SHAPES with my vis-a-vis pen onto a square canvas that I covered with hand painted collage paper and stained Indian Red (I was covering up a very ugly painting) I finished up with a painting I wouldn't describe as a dominant shape image. I will count it as shape since I started with shapes. I guess I really like broken color and lost edges. The other problem was the brushes I was using didn't create crisp edges. I probably would need to use good quality for that kind of precision. I avoid my best brushes with acrylic so as not to ruin then accidentally. Lame excuses, I know, but I have to put the blame somewhere!
Had fun, learned some things and had a productive morning. That's what it is all about.
Tomorrow I continue with my workshop. We will do day 3, 4 and 5 this week. Keep sending in your Frenchman Shape paintings. I have received some great ones and will create a slide show on Friday before I leave for Ocean Shores.
This ia a very strong painting - in your face with his stare. I like it. Just think what you could do if you were using good brushes!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors. Why did you decide to use acrylics? What kind did you use? Was the collage paper painted with acrylics as well?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was teaching, I bought some good brushes, a lot of cheap ones for the kids who would never wash their brushes and let their paint dry in them, and on everything else. I worked late almost every night, cleaning up everything!
ReplyDeleteI tried to have separate brushes for watercolors, acrylics, tempera, etc. We didn't use oils as we had such limited time and space.
For myself, I do keep my brushes separate, but I make sure that I clean them thoroughly after use.
In college, my art prof would let me use her personal paints because I was so neat and took such good care of my materials. I tried to instill that in my students, too. Things will last a lot longer that way, and they will continue to work properly longer.
wow, wow, wow, I love this one and also oct 3rd is inspiring.

Rita, I paint in acrylics on canvas. I also sometimes paint acrylics on YUPO and watercolor paper. I prefer the more liquid form than the tube form. I will be checking out the "Open Acrylics" next. I hate the dried paint that I waste. My collage papers are painted with diluted acrylic. Hope that answers some of your questions.
ReplyDeleteOh yummy. I love it. Whata lucky workshop bunch! Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteLove what you did with the acrylics and please let us know your experience with the Opens. I've received a few samples but was put off by the statement to wait 30 days to varnish. Canvas by Canvas may try to do a small collaborative piece with them. Again love your bright colors.
