My intention is to explore ideas and techniques and push myself beyond my comfort zone. I will be working in a series with several different images. My interests at this time are drawing, line, texture and color. I will be posting exercises and challenges for myself and any others who wish to join in the Creativity Journey.Myrna Wacknovhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13086356475188254683noreply@blogger.comBlogger970125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3598489002518349548.post-20123412521429874232019-03-19T23:14:00.000-07:002019-03-19T23:14:43.454-07:00REINSPIRED!!<br />

I am starting to hold semi-private lessons in my studio on the variations theme. I have the luxury of stretching the lessons out and presenting one or two ideas each week instead of overloading so much information into each day which a short workshop necessitates. We are discussing shape. While researching images to illustrate my concept, I came across a series of paintings that inspired me. The idea is to take an object and reduce it down to a simple shape and then create an interesting series using the elements and principles of design. I decided on a bowl on a table top. I also decided to explore the idea of incorporating personal symbols and use a square format. My first symbol is a triangle, a straight line, and an O. I have a beautiful hand made book of watercolor paper in a square format. I decided to fill it entirely with this project. I can decide later if I want to keep it in the book or present them separately. I normally work large but I am enjoying this small format. The scale allows me to use materials in a way that looks different. I can also work more quickly.</div>

</tbody></table>
The Sonoma Watercolor Society kindly asked me to do a demo for them for their January Meeting. It was a very stormy day when we drove the 2 hours to Santa Rosa but it was a wonderful turnout and I enjoyed sharing my new set of Primatek Daniel Smith paints I had received as an award from the California Watercolor Society annual national competition. I was anxious to try them out. The surface I prepared was gesso that had been texturized which made it extremely liftable. That turned out to be the good news/bad news. At the end of the two-hour demo, this was how far the painting was resolved. At this point, my biggest dissatisfaction was the dark blue area under the beard.<br />
<br />

After working on the painting back in my studio, I had resolved the background and garment to my satisfaction. I liked the character of the pigment in those areas as well as the hat but I did not like the skin tone or look of the pigment buildup in the dark areas of the face. Soooo........<br />

I decided I wanted to use more transparent and more vibrant colors for the skin and wiped out some of the Primatek pigment and liked the new color better but was not happy with the overall appearance of the facial features. Soooo.....<br />

I totally removed the color from the face and started over. As you can see, there was enough of the eye placement and nose to not have to start from a blank slate. My husband (the subject) was not happy that I had erased the original face as he liked it and told me not to "mess it up!" but one has to be willing to take a risk in order to create the best version possible within one's abilities at the time. If it resulted in losing a so-so painting, I was okay with that. Basically, it is only a piece of paper. The only thing lost is a few hours and a little paint. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the next week, I worked on the painting and struggled mostly with getting the nose painted in a way that I could accept. I must have wiped out and repainted that area 25 times! I wish I had actually tallied the attempts. The liftability of the of the surface made it difficult to get the depth of color and edges just right. I was determined to master this exasperating challenge so I soldiered on and FINALLY was satisfied with the last version. </div>

These drawing sessions are a wonderful opportunity to draw different body shapes. Last week the model was compact, very muscular and had very round shapes. This model was long in the torso, more angular and elongated lines. Next week I think we will have a male model. We have room for more artists to join us, so I hope some of you will drop in and give it a try. <br /><br />Myrna Wacknovhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13086356475188254683noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3598489002518349548.post-43403689141993961072019-01-15T16:43:00.000-08:002019-01-15T16:43:14.859-08:00DISCOVERY!<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br /><div style="text-align: justify;">
I remembered that I had done this pastel a long time ago when Robert Mueller was the FBI Director but not very recognizable by most people, myself included. I just saw this image and loved the interesting face and intricate finger pattern. When someone told me who it was, I put it away because I wasn't interested in doing known people. It has been buried in my stash of paintings. I finally reorganized that storage area and unearthed the painting. I wonder what he is thinking?</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tried to express cool shadows but it was challenging as the model had quite a bit of tattooing and it was difficult to determine what was shadow and what was merely ink. Fortunately, her skin tone and the ink were not so contrasting as to lose the form of the muscles. Light skinned models with lots of tattoos are almost impossible to draw as the imagery hides the subtle shifts in tone, If I had my way, I wouldn't hire a tattooed model. One model at a session I attended had an entire peacock in color over her entire back! Ridiculous from a drawing perspective.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">LIFE DRAWING SESSION 1/4/2019</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Last Friday we had our first life drawing session at the Peninsula Museum of Art!! It has been a long time since I have had the opportunity to draw from a live model and it was a treat!! I am excited that we will be having a 3-hour session every Friday for 10 weeks (to start) and I hope it is popular enough to continue on after that. We had seven artists for the first session. Most have studios in the building but it is open to anyone who would like to participate. You can purchase the entire set of sessions or buy a punch card for a few dollars more per session or just pay a drop in fee each week you come with no obligation for any additional sessions. If you live in the area and are interested, contact me. It will be every Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM. You will need to be there a little earlier to set up. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This time I decided to work with charcoal on newsprint. Next time, I am thinking I will try working smaller with ink in a sketchbook and I definitely want to try one session using my iPad Pro and work digitally. Having the drawing sessions each week gives me the opportunity to try lots of approaches and different materials. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some of the other drawings from Friday. We started out with 2 minute poses which tend to be about gesture and progressed to the last 3 poses that were 20 minutes each. </div>

You know the old saying, "if you keep on doing what you are doing, you will keep on getting what you get". Many people would like to break away from the same old same old but don't know what to do. I have developed a fun workshop where I share some interesting ideas for making changes that result in new directions for artists to grow in their pursuit of personal expression. One of the easiest changes is surface. Here I have changed the surface and the media from the last set of paintings I shared using this image. I have included all three together for comparison. I enjoy the challenges of changing media. If I paint this image again, I will change the scale to huge which will create its own challenges!<br />

If you take Mike Bailey's 10-week class through <a href="https://www.scvws.org/workshops.php">Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society's workshop offering, "Watercolor Beyond the Obvious"</a> he will have you go through your sketchbook and write on a number of pages in big, bold letters "WHAT MOOD DO YOU WANT?" Why? Because mood contributes significantly to content and content is what a painting is all about. If you take the same image (one of the important concepts of the class) and change the mood, you have a very different response, a different message, a different content. I have painted this same panorama from a scene my son photographed while on a boating excursion up in Washington State near the Canadian border. By changing the color palette and the intensity, I created two different moods. The composition and scale also contribute to the mood, but the color is the dominant contributor to the mood in these pieces.</div>
<div>
These are small studies on Tyvek paper, in preparation for a larger painting. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are curious about taking the workshop, it starts in January. Just follow the link and check it out. I have taken the class four times and it has been the most significant educational influence on my work. Beginners to advanced painters gain significant value from this workshop. <br /><br /><br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Inbetween getting ready for Open Studios, I was doing some experimental tests with some new paints that I purchased. They have metal particles suspended in a mixture of binding and pigment. When sprayed with an oxidizing chemical, they rust or create a verdigris. I wanted to incorporate some of this into my paintings but needed to have a better idea of what I might expect on different surfaces, letting the paint dry first or adding the chemical spritz while still wet, using two coats, putting one metal pigment over another, etc. I tried to create as many variables as I could think of. The above image has tissue paper, Tyvek, watercolor paper, etc. with iron pigment, copper pigment, and bronze pigment. I used some stencils and a bunch of various sized gears as a resist. Now that all my holiday company has gone home, I can concentrate on doing some serious painting in the studio. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">METAL OXIDATION TEST #2</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a piece of Tyvek that I had printed previously with some abstract acrylic. I wanted to see what adding to the surface with the metallic paints, oxidized, would look like. This piece will either get more layers of something or get torn up and incorporated into another work. Saving paintings that are "dogs" allows you to work uninhibitedly in an experimental fashion without the fear of ruining something. Learning what not to do is often more valuable than learning what works.</div>

This is a painting of my husband's eldest living brother who will turn 95 on Thursday. For an explanation of the process I used to create this painting, you can check out my blog post here <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3598489002518349548#editor/target=post;postID=21719275180847848;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=7;src=link">"NO BRUSH" PAINTING FINISHED</a><br />
<br />
The plan was to celebrate this wonderful milestone with a joyous celebration. His sister's husband of 67 years, who was 92, passed away on Sunday, so we will be saying goodbye to a beloved family member on Thursday and honoring the patriarch of the family on Saturday. The entire extended family will be together from all over the country which is a blessing. We need to celebrate all the seasons of our life and acknowledge every milestone along the way. In the winter of our lives, every day seems more precious. The truth is no one knows how many days there will be, so share kindness, give joy, express love and appreciation and celebrate each other.<br />

This is my entry for the American Watercolor Society for 2019. I just entered the painting yesterday, so it was in my mind in sharp detail. Today after Synagogue Services in remembrance of the Tree of Life Victims in Pittsburg I was sitting at a table having lunch and was introduced to a couple directly across from me. Her head was turned in this exact position with red hair, green eyes, pert nose, and eye structure, she was the woman in the painting come to life! The photo reference for the painting was taken in Paris almost 15 years ago so it must be her doppelganger. I would have loved to take a photo of my new friend but it isn't allowed in the Synagogue on the Sabbath. Next time we meet I will definitely snap a photo.<br />
<br />
The American Watercolor Society international competition is the only one I am aware of that doesn't require the entry to be painted within the last few years. Since they don't accept any mixed media in the entries, I am grateful to be able to reach back in time. So much of my current work has collaged material embedded. If you are thinking of entering, don't waste time, the deadline is fast approaching on Sunday, November 18th!Myrna Wacknovhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13086356475188254683noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3598489002518349548.post-82239327561044748682018-11-02T10:10:00.000-07:002018-11-02T10:10:18.279-07:00I'M BACK!<br />

It has been a long time since I have posted on my blog. Several of my internet friends have written me lovely notes expressing they have missed my sharing. Thank you for your interest in my activities and continued support. I am happy to report that it is my intention to post once a week on a regular basis from now on. I am reading a fabulous book called Atomic Habits and have figured out a system to support my good intentions. </div>

I have been trying to organize my studio for an Open Studios weekend coming up in a few weeks. I have included a poster of the event for those of you in the area who might be interested in stopping by. Not only are there 30 artists working studios to visit but there are 5 major shows on display in the Museum as well. George Rivera, the former curator of the Trident Museum in Santa Clara has a particularly exceptional exhibition in one of the main gallery rooms. If you stop by my studio during the weekend and mention this blog, I will have a gift of a drawing for you. Hope to see you then.</div>

How wonderful that the internet has made possible amazing connections across the world and across generations! One of the advantages of age is experiencing the profound changes in the world and how we engage with each other and remaining in awe of what is possible today (not to mention the challenge of keeping up!) Art can be the common thread that brings us together at every age.</div>

I was very flattered that Christian was interested in my art so I sent him information on the particular image he was wanting to study. The other day, Chris sent me an update on his project with images of the finished project. I received his permission to share with all of you the great job he did and the amazing final piece. I started this painting last Sunday as a demo for the Las Gatos Art Association. It is watercolor over what I like to call reconstructed Tyvek. I tear up old paintings that didn't go well that were painted on Tyvek and stick them down over other old painting "dogs" thus eliminating storage of two ugly works and salvaging the paper while creating a very intriguing surface to make a new start. My oldest son was visiting from San Diego and was able to attend. He always gives me such great feedback. Sitting in the audience, he has a chance to see and hear what I cannot. I always like to draw the image in front of the group so they will perhaps have more confidence in direct drawing rather than tracing or projecting an image. It turns out no one in the audience could actually see what I had drawn so they were looking at what appeared to be a blank piece of paper for 15 minutes!! I guess I will pre-draw the next one. It's a shame but I need to keep the color light so I can easily make any necessary corrections. The other good tip he gave me was to demonstrate the actual creation of reconstructed Tyvek instead of just describing it. People were confused by my explanation, so my bad! <br />
<br />
I will be giving another demo for the Los Altos Art Club on Monday, March 12th and the Hillview Community Center at 7PM. I hope some of you can stop by and see the new and improved performance!<br />
<br />
I finished up the painting this week. I normally use a muted neutral background color but red seemed to be calling to me. Red is a color of emotion and power, perhaps anger and rage. At the very least it is a color of strength. Anger and impotent rage was the response I was feeling to the school shootings this past week and the political torture for the past year. When I am painting. I am in the zone and the world drops away. My unconscious emotions show up on the page. Someone asked me to teach how I achieve the emotional content in my portraits. I can't because it just shows up and there is no formula or technique. That's why you need to paint what you love and your soul will show up, too.Myrna Wacknovhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13086356475188254683noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3598489002518349548.post-65085516443377489832018-01-17T22:04:00.001-08:002018-01-17T22:04:37.980-08:00STARTING TO SEE RESULTS<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When you do a series based on the same image, you know eventually something special is going to show up. So every day you do something and most of the time it is ordinary. I do try to push the envelope each time and explore something a little different. Here I have elongated the face because my iPhone screen is long and narrow so my digital drawings needed to follow that format. This is a painting I started today. The surface was a collage I had created a few years ago. I liked it so much that I saved it for just the right image to place on top. I thought this one would work. I made sure that the papers showed through in the finished work. Sometimes i wind up covering over the beautiful papers and I hate when that happens. You can click on the image to see it in better detail.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Every year around December, I take some quiet time to contemplate what I would like to focus on for the coming year. I consider all aspects of my life. this helps me to focus and set some concrete action plans to move forward. Art is a major activity in my life and I have found by limiting my activity to a few ideas, I actually expand my growth and accomplish more than just drifting along with no direction.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Lately I have discovered some exciting artists who have ideas I want to incorporate into my work. They work in mixed media and in abstract ways. These are areas I wish to grow my knowledge. Of course, for me, drawing and portraiture will be part of the mix. Robyn Mcclendon is one of the artists I have been watching on YouTube videos . She has been doing a 365 day practice for a number of years now. She has inspired me to do a daily practice for the coming year. So far, I have not missed a day!!!! Maybe it is a little early to celebrate!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Jane Davies is the other artist I absolutely love!! I have signed up to take an on-line course with her starting in February. This will be an interesting adventure. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This is the image I have decided to concentrate on for the coming year. I have a few variations if I run out of steam. It is an image of my son that I love and have done several major paintings based on this image. It continues to be a favorite. I am calling it Man of the Year. I have decided to do a drawing a day for the year. I am convinced that daily practice will produce great rewards. The last time I did a years' worth of drawings was perhaps my most productive, so I am counting on this practice to fulfill my goals The other goal I wish to pursue is doing a small abstract collage each day. I can only accomplish the collage on the days I am in my studio. So far I have combined the daily drawing with the collage when in the studio. The best part of this daily project is being able to take a few minutes at the end of the day and do a quick drawing with my finger on my iPhone if I need to accomplish my goal. It makes it a "no excuses" goal. </div>

Here are the collage and drawing combos I have done so far.</div>

This is where we left off on the last post. I decided it needed a unifying tone, so I collaged a single sheet of tan tissue over the entire painting. The second benefit is that I now have a surface that will take watercolor especially the wax paper with gesso on it. I wanted to use watercolor for the transparent quality so I wouldn't lose the collage details. </div>

I saw a video where someone had used a tampon as a non-traditional mark making m out. They make great blending tools and a way to apply even color over a large area. What a great discovery!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The hands are very problematic! The original collage paper is too dark and throwing off the values I need. Using my finger, I applied more gesso to the hands giving me a better surface to add back color and make some subtle improvements on the drawing .</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I thought I was finished but every time I photograph the work something jumps out at me that didn't register before. Time for fine tuning! The yellow behind the head on the left too strong and the white on the collar is the brightest spot on the page making it the focal point. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I toned the entire background with quin gold...now it's too yellow. Neutralized it with the compliment of purple, much better. This has darkened the background, making the light shape on the right drawing too much attention. Fixed that problem, toned down the color and called it a day!</div>

This layer is collage, acrylic ink drawing and sponge roller painting. Still not satisfying.<br />

I added more collage papers including some gesso texture on waxed paper. I was never sure if I could successfully collage waxed paper but it seems to work out okay. Looking better. I think a layer of tan tissue I collected for a dress shop might unify the image, but first I need to get my drawing back.<br />

I added more ink drawing done with a balsa wood stick. Tomorrow, after tissue paper, I will add some acrylic using my fingers. Bought some thin latex type gloves so my hands won't be a disaster. I am excited about creating some new paintings to illustrate my latest workshop: Variatons 2.0. In the original Variations workshop we changed the image using the Elements ofArt. In this Variations workshop we are going to change the image by changing other ingredients such as surface, tools, emphasis and format. Any change will result in a new direction so chnaging things up adds exciement and discovery to your work.<br />
<br />
For me, the first step is simplification. I start with a detailed drawing from a photograph. In this case I used a mechanical #2 lead pencil. Then I put the photograph away and work from my drawing. I like to draw with ink, over and over as I become familiar with my subject. Putting in every detail is easy, a no brainer. Simplification is difficult. One has to make decisions and search out the most important aspects of the image that communicate your message to the viewer.<br />

<br /> A quick way to get to the essence of the image is to draw with a mop string dipped in ink. Fussy details are impossible with this drawing method. I started out with the full image. I wanted to hone in on some of the details like the head and hands so I did separate drawings of these elements.<br />

I found a feather in my collection of drawing materials and decided to see what kind of line I could get with the feather dipped in ink. Then left handed drawing. I now appreciate the difficulty of writing if you are left handed. It seemed I was getting in my own way. The feather was very interesting. It will take lots of practice but I think it has promisse as an interesting tool.<br />

Tried using an eyedropper and then my "Oiler Boiler" needle bottle. Tried both dominant right hand and awkward non-dominant left hand mostly continuous line drrawing. I use newsprint sheets because they are large, cheap and I was able to purchase a ream of them. Along the way, I decided the most important aspects of this image for me are pose, interlocked fingers of the hand, suspenders, eyebrows strong creases by side of nose and mouth and the chin.<br />

I am excited to be teaching a workshop about working on YUPO for the Pleasanton Art League in October. I decided to refresh my techniques and explore more ideas to share. This is an example I just finished using India Ink on YUPO. You cover the paper with ink and then remove the lighter values to get the final result. Every day for a week I recovered the page with ink at the end of the session because I wasn't satisfied with the result. That is one of the best things about YUPO. You can keep reworking, removing, reapplying, lifting, etc. without damaging the paper. I love that the paper doesn't buckle and I was surprised to discover that you can even use a dryer (carefully!) to speed things along. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am also developing a second Variations workshop, still based on creating a series utilizing one image but changing it up based on a different set of conditions. I will be sharing these ideas in Tampa July 16 through the 19th 2018 at Watercolor Escape. I love developing these workshops. I hope some of you will be able to join me!</div>

<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">
I am usually not inspired to paint landscapes except when I travel. This was a scene from our boat trip on the waterways from Amsterdam to Brugge earlier this summer. Nice that the camera records where you are when you take the shot, otherwise I wouldn't know this was from the village of Haastecht, which is very near Gouda. The long, narrow canvas was a challenge. I had to create a more simplified and interesting foreground than in the photo. I also enjoyed the challenge of mixing various greens. Mixing it up by using a different canvas proportion, different perspective and unexpected greens created a personal vision for a landscape.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are at least two other paintings underneath this one. I lose track sometimes as to what lies beneath! Nice to finally feel satisfied and I can move on. Eventually they all find a satisfying finished painting, but lots and lots of false starts. The build up does make for an interesting surface. This one has a coat of gesso that I used a sponge roller over the top. When it dried, it had a very rough finish. Paint scumbles beautifully on this surface but it chews up brushes so don't use good sable on this type of surface.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With every painting, I try to learn something new. I explored surface and color mixing and think I have added to my ongoing attempt to master painting in acrylic. How boring it would be to know it all. Fortunately, there is always something new to learn. </div>

So many artists of my generation are not embracing the new technology at their fingertips With all the incredible digital programs available for phones and tablets from altering photos to drawing and painting digitally, it is a treasure chest of new ideas and ways of creating from combining traditional methods with digital to working completely digitally. Staying current with technology is fabulous for keeping one's mind and spirit young and functioning optimally. Although I prefer actually manipulating art materials, it has been so much fun learning how to manipulate digital art as well. Especially at night while I am relaxing in a chair or waiting in the airport, doctor's office and other sit around and wait times. It has become my new "sketch book" an artist is encouraged to have with them at all times.<br />
<br />
<br />
I have learned how to work with these programs on my own with out any instruction. That is, until a few weekends ago when I had the wonderful opportunity to take a 2 day seminar on various digital programs as well as information on printing, marketing and everything digital. mDAC sponsored the weekend program and it was fabulous. I loved meeting others who are really embracing this brave new world and learning how to go deeper into these programs. Here are some of the new digital images I created at the seminar and since. My goal is to do a digital drawing or painting everynight while I veg out in my comfy arm chair.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As most of you know, I rarely do landscape paintings. The exceptions are usually related to traveling. Painting is the most wonderful way to revisit trips creating an indelible memory. This past June, I had the unusual opportunity to travel along the waterways between Amsterdam and the seaport of ZeeBrugge on a 35 foot sport boat. It was a beautiful experience and I took tons of photos. I thought I would be painting while cruising but that turned out to be impractical. I am now in the process of turning some of those images into paintings. This is the first one I have completed. Taking photos from the docks provided a lower vantage point than normal, giving a different perspective to the landscape. I liked shooting through the vegetation. This particular scene doesn't seem to be typical of what we think of Belgium or Holland but it brings back special memories for me. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSGMJ93HlIVUhysB5WJM-RzCYZiKE1GN99Eiuh7caWBqNQCQmH3U8skwAEF_uq2wCAt7cHH4vLKrTElk4UX_UeVPxOffgrPNctFiMn7xh3WGtUEHSEs7unOS_4tB8byJ70TKuBZb1YVfx/s1600/IMG_3352.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSGMJ93HlIVUhysB5WJM-RzCYZiKE1GN99Eiuh7caWBqNQCQmH3U8skwAEF_uq2wCAt7cHH4vLKrTElk4UX_UeVPxOffgrPNctFiMn7xh3WGtUEHSEs7unOS_4tB8byJ70TKuBZb1YVfx/s400/IMG_3352.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For me, it starts with a photograph, usually of a person. I had found a clever little gadget called a PODO which acts like a selfie stick without the stick. It is a small square lens that can be attached to any surface by a sticky pad on the device. It connects by blue tooth to your phone. This allows me to shoot photos at unusual angles and create perspective distortion which I find fun to paint. I was sitting at a desk at an art exhibit for the day and decided to play with my new "toy". I stuck the PODO at a low angle on the desk leg and set my phone on the floor in front of me so I could see what the lens was picking up. Here is one of the photos I took that day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I straightened the image, cropped the photo and eliminated the background. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyiDHAIsYTGE5JquvRfpIjTl8_6efumPmo5xs2yoF5izIdtT6kSajpJJt-DI0DhE8UYBLuuiPzQRCNJk7KIoKeIFZbywBoFpNZeKNON6glv7N-f8NK_2EXZwz_HKjG-H9Y1Gu-m3co7RDe/s1600/IMG_3509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyiDHAIsYTGE5JquvRfpIjTl8_6efumPmo5xs2yoF5izIdtT6kSajpJJt-DI0DhE8UYBLuuiPzQRCNJk7KIoKeIFZbywBoFpNZeKNON6glv7N-f8NK_2EXZwz_HKjG-H9Y1Gu-m3co7RDe/s400/IMG_3509.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I digitally created a line drawing using Procreate </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a painting I wanted to paint over. I was hoping to save the circle patterns in the background.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I covered the face with turquoise acrylic, had fun spritzing with water and alcohol and then turned it upside down to disguise the image underneath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Using my line drawing as a guide, I drew the new image onto the paper and proceeded to establish a value pattern.</div>

Not at all happy at this point. Along with many other problems, I decided that the hands were too small for the head. Start over by covering with gesso and redraw the image. </div>

I might have over exaggerated the hands this time. I photographed the painting and then put it into my favorite app where I could overlay my current painting with my digital drawing and save the blend. Now I have a guide to correct the drawing!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I just finished this painting yesterday. I have been exploring some ways to work with acrylic lately. I managed to photograph the work at the end of each day, with a small exception. I forgot to take a photo after the charcoal drawing and remembered after I had started to add color but one can still see the progression clearly. I wasn't sure how I was going to finish the painting until I was there. That is a nice quality about acrylic is it is so changeable and fixable. With watercolor there is much less flexibility.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This particular piece of paper has 3 different paintings if viewed through an x-ray machine. I don't even remember what the original failed painting was. I covered that over with collage papers and did a painting on that. Another dog! Time to reinvent. So here are the steps I took to get to this image. I think I will keep this one. </div>
